News Update: May 1st 2014

The cast has been revealed! Disney and Lucasfilm have officially unveiled the cast line-up for Star Wars VII set to hit theaters next December. The announcement brings back original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels and Peter Mayhew. Newcomers to the scene include actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow and Andy Serkis (who you may be familiar as Gollum from the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit films. We speculate that Serkis’ character will follow something along that line.)

A group photo of the cast has been released as seen above.

Disney Interactive made a giant announcement this week around Disney Infinity, and at an event in Los Angeles Wednesday morning April 30th, they revealed that Marvel’s Avengers are coming to Disney Infinity, joining a large cast of already existing characters, but until yesterday, Marvel characters were absent from the game. You can now play as any of the Avengers, consisting of Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, Hawkeye and Thor. You can play with many different devices and locations by purchasing additional power discs, one including Agent Phil Coulson’s “Lola” vehicle from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. What more could you possibly ask for?

With the opening of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train just weeks away, Disney Parks continues to tease at the the upcoming ride, and released yet another video of almost the entire ride-through of the attraction. The construction walls recently came down around the ride, and the carts going around the track can be seen quite frequently on regular days in Magic Kingdom, so expect a release date to be announced soon. We’re suspecting of possibly an end of May opening.

Just a few weeks ago, we announced a brand new upcoming home video film starring Mickey and the rest of the gang from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The film, Around the Clubhouse World, takes the gang on a journey across the globe, learning about different cultures in various different countries. Below is a clip that became available this week. The film is available on DVD May 20th, 2014.

Going viral in Disney circles this week is this hilarious fan-made video made by two fans of the film Frozen and filmed in Disneyland. The video features a couple singing to the hit Frozen song, “Love is an Open Door”, and it shines among many of the other Frozen parodies found on the internet.

Love is an Open Door Fan:

A week ago we reviewed Disneynature’s latest film, Bears, a truly wonderful film. Disneynature promised to donate part of the movie’s financial success with the National Park Foundation for every ticket sold on opening weekend. We’re super excited to hear that many people saw the film and Disney delivered the donations to the NPF, and announced that it will be expanding it’s commitment to conservation and would be donating an additional amount than the one previously promised. If you missed seeing the film opening weekend, Disney will also give a portion to the NPF if you purchase any of the following:

  •       Young fans unlocked an exclusive bear costume on Disney Club Penguin to support the National Park Foundation: www.ClubPenguin.com.
  •       The Disney Music Group is contributing a portion of each iTunes download of Olivia Holt’s Friends for Change anthem “Carry On”: iTunes.com/CarryOn.
  • The Disney Store committed a portion of “Bears” plush purchases to the National Park Foundation:www.disneystore.com.
  •       At Disney Parks, a special Duffy the Disney Bear benefited the National Park Foundation in April.
  •          Disney Cruise Line made a contribution in celebration of the movie, which also premiered on the high seas.
  •       Regal Entertainment Group introduced a gift card program in conjunction with “Bears” that resulted in a contribution to the National Park Foundation: www.regmovies.com.
  •      New York jewelry designer Alex Woo designed eco-friendly pendants inspired by the film, available in Sterling Silver & 14kt Gold—a portion of each sale benefits the National Park Foundation: www.alexwoo.com.
More details have been unveiled about the It's a Small World film which is being developed at Disney. Director John Turtletaub (National Treasure, The Sorcerer's Apprentice) has been signed on to direct the film. No release date has yet been announced.

Muppets Most Wanted, Disney's latest fantastic Muppet adventure hits Blu-Ray and DVD August 5th 2014! No bonus features have been revealed yet, but the film will be available this summer to own. Muppets Most Wanted takes the Muppet gang on an adventure throughout Europe, only to get caught up with Constantine, the World's Most Dangerous Frog and get tangled up in a jewel hesit caper. The film is still playing in theaters worldwide. Read our review of the film here on The Mickey Mindset as well as our review on our other site, The Muppet Mindset.

And in very sad news this week, legendary actor Bob Hoskins has passed away at the age of 71 on Tuesday. Hoskins was well known in the Disney circles as Eddie Valiant in Disney/Touchstone's Who Framed Roger Rabbit. We pay tribute to Hoskins for his brilliant acting in this video below, showcasing his wonderful acting talents, and what process he went through to film the Roger Rabbit movie.

News Update: April 11th 2014

Starting off the news this week, the first teaser trailer for Disney Channel's Upcoming show, Girl Meets World has surfaced the internet. The show is a spin-off of the Disney Channel show which ran from 1993 to 2000. Characters Cory and Topanga return to the spin-off show, this time playing the parents of the main child characters. Watch the first teaser here:

Season two of the new Mickey Mouse shorts premiere on Disney Channel today, April 11th! Make sure you keep you DVRs running at 9:00 EST to catch the new wonderful shorts!

This week, the Disney Parks celebrated fifty years of the famous "It's a Small World' attraction with a major worldwide celebration. The folks over at Inside the Magic have the full scoop, which you can read right here. Coverage of the entire event can also be found over at The Disney Blog as well right here

Toughpigs.com published this great article setting the record straight: The Muppets are still puppets, and no CGI was used in Muppets Most Wanted, contrary to internet rumors of the Muppets being replaced by CGI in some scenes. You can read that great article right here.

Speaking of Muppets, our friends over at This Happy Place Blog raised an excellent idea. What if the abandoned "Wonders of Life" exhibit became "Muppet Labs?" Make sure to check out their creative and exciting new ideas of what could quite possibly be of use for the abandoned building in a new, fun and creative way. You can read the article here

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is the show on TV that just keeps getting better and better. This week, ABC aired an episode leading directly off of last week's new film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The episode includes spoilers of the film, and this seems to be the new direction that the show will be taking from now on. Marvel released this all-new video where the cast and crew of the TV series talk about the new direction the show will be taking. Spoilers ahead.

An all-new Mickey Mouse Clubhouse adventure will be hitting DVD shelves May 20th 2014! Around the Clubhouse World takes the Fab Five on a journey through France, China, Italy and more, and learn about different countries and cultures, with lots of song-filled fun, and will feature a slew of bonus episodes from the series.

The date draws closer for the opening of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in New Fantasyland in Walt Disney World, and today, Disney Parks released a thirty-second video taking a look at some of the impressive new Audio-Animatronics that will be featured in the attraction.

UPDATE: Disney Parks ALSO released this 16-second CGI ride through of the attraction. Now we'r really, really excited.

Disneynature's Bears opens next Friday, and in anticipation for the release, Disney released two more clips from the film, two of some of my favorite clips from the movie. In fact, the whole film is wonderful. We'll be reviewing the movie in it's entirety later this week.

Speaking of Disneynature, the trailer for their next big film has been released yesterday online. The film, Monkey Kingdom will swing into theaters Earth Day 2015.

For the final bit of news this week, Disneyland Paris announced that Marvel's Spider-Man will start making meet-and-greet appearances starting April 19th in the Walt Disney Studios park! Disney also released this artwork to anticipate the upcoming appearances.

That's it for this week's short weekly news roundup! Be on the lookout for some special brand-new reviews this week, including our review for Disneynature's new film: Bears.

Top Ten Mickey Mouse Shorts

Michael Wermuth- Mickey Mouse is one of the most iconic cartoon characters of all time, not just for The Walt Disney Company. And he has starred in a lot of great shorts. Let’s take a look at my top ten favorite Mickey Mouse shorts.

10. His red shorts. You know which ones I’m talking about, the ones with the two yellow buttons.

9. His other red shorts with the yellow buttons. Man, nobody wears red shorts with buttons quite like Mickey.

8. Those other red shorts with the two yellow buttons. I’d like to see Donald and Goofy try to wear shorts like those.

….Hmm, as I guess I didn’t think this list through. All of Mickey’s shorts look the same.

Oh, right, animated shorts starring Mickey Mouse. Silly me….

10. Get a Horse!

Get a Horse is the most recent theatrical short starring Mickey Mouse, and it’s a lot better than I had expected (and keep in mind I already had great expectations for this short). It starts out in the style of a 1928 Mickey Mouse cartoon – Mickey doesn’t wear gloves, has his round black eyes, there’s barely any dialogue (though existing audio from Walt Disney is used for the few times Mickey’s voice is heard), but then when  Mickey tries to save Minnie from Pete, they leave the theater screen, becoming computer animated as Mickey, Minnie, Pete, and others constantly go in and out of the screen. In fact this short seems like something that would have made a great Disney theme park attraction (unfortunately, I didn’t see the short in 3D). I would have liked to have placed this higher on the list, except it’s too new and I’ve only seen it once so far.

9. Mickey’s Rival

In this short, Mickey and Minnie have a picnic, which gets interrupted by an old acquaintance of Minnie’s, Mortimer Mouse (“Mortimer” was what Walt Disney had originally wanted to name Mickey). Mortimer not only causes jealousy for Mickey, but is also a very rude jerk to Mickey. It’s especially funny when Mortimer asks Mickey if he wants the buttons on his shorts. Eventually, Mortimer finds a bull behind a fence, and foolishly holds a red cape over it, unaware that the gate is open, and cowardly runs off, accidentally getting Minnie wrapped in it and needing Mickey (and Mickey’s car, who happens to be alive in this) to rescue her.

8. Mickey’s Delayed Date

In this short, Mickey is late to his date with Minnie, and goes through a lot of trouble getting dressed and arriving, causing much of his clothes to get ruined. But then it turns out that they’re going to a costume party, and Minnie thinks Mickey’s outfit is a costume.

7. The Little Whirlwind

This short was made during a brief time when Mickey’s ears had some perspective in them. In this short, Mickey finds a pie on Minnie’s window, which Minnie won’t let him have, but agrees to let him have some pie in exchange for doing yard-work. However, the wind keeps messing things up for Mickey. What’s interesting about this short is that Mickey and Minnie don’t appear to be a couple. There have been other shorts where they aren't a couple at first but instantly fall in love upon meeting, but here Minnie doesn't seem interested in Mickey at all.

6. Mickey’s Good Deed

In this short, Mickey is a homeless street musician on Christmas Eve. A very spoiled, very bratty boy sees Pluto and wants him, but Mickey refuses to sell his dog until he comes across a house of poor children, and sells Pluto so he can buy presents for the children. However, the kid plays rough with Pluto, and eventually the boys father gets so fed up that he orders his butler to throw Pluto out and gives his son a well-deserved spanking. Mickey and Pluto are reunited, and Pluto happened to have some turkey tied to his tail.

5. Plane Crazy

The first Mickey Mouse cartoon produced. Mickey takes Minnie on a plane ride, which gets wild and crazy at first, eventually going off on its own as pilot Mickey falls out of the plane. This cartoon shows a rare mean side to Mickey, with him intentionally scaring Minnie when she refuses to kiss him, and later laughing at Minnie after she falls off the plane (saved by her panties, which inflates into a parachute for her). It’s fun watching the early, more mischievous side to Mickey (before he had to become a goody-two-shoes role model).

4. Lonesome Ghosts

In this short, Mickey, Donald Duck, and Goofy work as ghost exterminators (pre-dating Ghostbusters by a few decades). They get a call from ghosts who are bored. Although the ghosts constantly get the better of them, the ghosts end up getting scared away when the trio gets stuck in dough, making them look like ghosts.

3. Runaway Brain

I saw this one in the theater. In Runaway Brain, Mickey forgets about his and Minnie’s anniversary, and in an attempt to convince Minnie that he had remembered, plans a golf date, only when showing her the ad in the paper, she sees the wrong ad, thinking Mickey was taking her to Hawaii. With a trip to Hawaii being too expensive, Mickey accepts a job that pays the amount needed in just one day, but unfortunately it’s to have Mickey’s brain switched with a Frankenstein’s Monster-type monster, who soon becomes crazy about Minnie.

2. Mickey’s Birthday Party

In this cartoon, Minnie and the gang throw a surprise birthday party for Mickey, with some great music and dancing, as well as funny scenes with Goofy struggling to make the cake.

1. Steamboat Willie

Yes, I honestly feel like the first (theatrically released) Mickey Mouse cartoon is the best. There’s so much to like, including the classic image of Mickey steering the helm of the boat, Mickey and Minnie making music from animals, and the ending, in which Mickey throws a potato at a parrot, is hilarious.

Why Aren't Classic Disney Channel Shows on DVD?

Michael Wermuth-I didn’t have The Disney Channel until it switched from premium to basic cable in 1997, but I did get to watch the channel often before then, at my babysitter’s house and on special weeks when The Disney Channel was available for free. And I must say, the channel was a lot better back then than it is now (not that I watch the channel voluntarily very often now). It had a wide variety of non-Tween programming, lots of classic Disney shorts aired, the channel’s Vault Disney block contained stuff like Disney’s classic anthology show (the channel always listed it as “Walt Disney Presents”, even though it had other titles), and the original Mickey Mouse Club (as well as The New Mickey Mouse Club), the channel aired a lot of non-Disney programming (and maybe that’s still true now, but back in the past Disney aired various Jim Henson productions long before buying the Muppets, lots of Peanuts specials and movies, and even some of the Looney Tunes compilation films, among other properties), and of course original programming. And in an age where all kinds of retro shows have been released on DVD, I must ask this: How come none of the classic Disney Channel shows have been on DVD?

Why do classic shows from the early years of The Disney Channel need to be released on DVD? Well, technically, they don’t need to be available on DVD, and I’d much rather have most of The Disney Afternoon shows be completed, but it’d still be nice to see these old shows on DVD. But what were the most memorable original Disney Channel shows of the 1980s and 1990s?

Well, there’s Dumbo’s Circus. That was a decent show. It used puppet and costume versions of Dumbo, plus a variety of characters not from the classic animated movie. I don’t really remember the names of the other characters, and there’s really only one episode I remember, but it had quite a catchy theme song. For some reason, Timothy Mouse wasn’t on the show, though there was a Koala who resembled the character a bit. It would have been nice if at least one episode had been on the Blu-ray of Dumbo (well there’s always the next release…).

Perhaps a better-known show with costumed and puppet versions of classic Disney characters was Welcome to Pooh Corner, featuring the Winnie the Pooh characters. This show featured an on-screen narrator, a story involving the characters, a song segment (I think these were repeated in multiple episodes, much like the various segments from Sesame Street), and another segment with the narrator talking to one of the characters. This series also spawned a fairly infamous PSA special called Too Smart for Strangers (I actually don’t remember seeing that show). Out of all the shows I’m mentioning in this article, I am most surprised that this show hasn’t had a DVD release, especially considering how much of a cash chow franchise Winnie the Pooh has been in the past decades. I heard a rumor that when the 2011 Winnie the Pooh movie was released that Disney wasn’t releasing any new Pooh DVDs out of fear that consumers would confuse them for the movie, but how could anybody confuse Welcome to Pooh Corner for the 2011 film? I especially liked the songs that appeared on the show. It’d be great to hear Pooh and Piglet’s “Please is a Good Word”, Eeyore’s “Yes I Can”, or Piglet’s “Say Hello” songs again.

Another show on the channel is it’s own version of The Mickey Mouse Club, commonly referred to as MMC. This version didn’t really interest me as a kid (I was expecting animated segments, which were not included, plus other elements of the original series which this show avoided). This show was pretty much a teen variety show. Many of this show’s Mouse-Kateers would go on to be famous pop stars in their own right, including Brittany Spears, Christina Agulerro, and N*sync’s Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez. So maybe it’s not pop artists I’m interested in, but that fact alone should have gotten this series a DVD release by now.

The final series I’m going to talk about is Adventures in Wonderland, based on Alice in Wonderland. Each series was bookened by scenes of Alice in her room in the real world. The structure would be: Alice would talk to her cat about some sort of problem she’s having, she enters Wonderland through her mirror, the plot would somehow be related to her problem, and she’d talk to her cat about the experience and have learned a solution to her problem. So a lot of characters were different from their animated Disney counterparts, and the Queen was a lot nicer (not the kind of person who’d shout “OFF WITH HER HEAD!”), but they pretty much got The Chesire Cat right. It’s especially puzzling that this series didn’t get a DVD release when Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland got released.

Maybe those shows will get released on DVD someday, but only time will tell. I should point out one show I am aware I didn’t talk about: Kids Incorporated. I didn’t talk about that show because Disney doesn’t own the rights to it (though Disney does have the master tapes in its vaults).

What's your favorite retro Disney Channel TV show? Which show do you want to be released to DVD most? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!

News Update: January 17th 2014

Mitchell Stein- Another big news week this week from the Walt Disney Studios, Pixar, Marvel, Studio Ghibli and much more!

The Golden Globes hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took place this week and the Disney masterpiece Frozen took home the award for Best Animated Picture. It did not win the other category which it was nominated for which was for Let It Go which was heard in the movie (we're shocked).

In other Frozen news this week, Disney confirmed rumors that they are in fact working on a Frozen stage adaption but not necessarily Broadway. According to a Fortune Article  CEO Bob Iger Disney Theatrical is working on a stage show, quite possibly just for the Disney theme parks but is unknown at this time. (Photo from CartoonBrew.com)

The popular Disney Junior show Mickey Mouse Clubhouse will be releasing another DVD coming up this February. The special "Minne-rella" is inspired by Disney's Classic Film, Cinderella  and will be available to own on February 11th. Be on the lookout for a review soon!

Other Blu-Ray DVDs news includes Delivery Man starring Vince Vaughn, Cobie Smulders and Chris Pratt will be delivered (pun intended) on March 25th 2014. Bonus features include behind the scenes looks and bloopers and more.

Sofia the First,  another popular Disney Junior show, will be returning in her own upcoming DVD special in Sofia the First: The Floating Palace and will feature a cameo by the Little Mermaid's Ariel. The special swims (gee, we gotta stop with the puns...) onto DVD April 8th 2014.

Ridley Pearson's Kingdom Keepers series, the series of novels that take place within the Disney Theme Parks seventh installment now has an official cover! It will be available to own on April 1st, 2014.
Official Synopsis:
The Kingdom Keepers’ senior year in high school is almost over. For more than three years, things have been quiet. Their battles are long behind them, they agree, the threat to the Disney realm silenced albeit at great cost. But inside the catacombs of the Aztec temple where Finn Whitman faced down his nemesis, the monstrous Chernabog, a new threat brews.

Camp Minne-Mickey at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando has sadly closed down this week to make way for the Avatar section to open in 2017. We will always miss the legendary and memorable section of the park and we remember the park by a great photo tribute from Character Central.
But, continuing in that news, the Avatar Land (or Pandora?) has already begun construction! Be ready to see construction walls in the parks for the next four years. Disney posted these two pictures on the first day of construction.

The nominees are in! The Nominated films for the 86th Annual Academy Awards have been announced and Disney earned eight nominations in total! The list is as follows:
Frozen- Best Animated Film, Best Original Song
The Lone Ranger- Makeup and Hair-styling, Visual Effects
Get A Horse!- Animated Short Film
Saving Mr. Banks- Original Score (by Thomas Newman)
Iron Man 3- Visual Effects
The Wind Rises (Studio Ghibli)- Best Animated Feature

Of course, we're shocked that Monsters University was not nominated for Animated Feature or Emma Thompson for Best Actress. Read our reactions about the Disney nominees here!

Fresh off the success of Toy Story of Terror!, Pixar and ABC announced another Toy Story television special will be airing this Christmas on ABC named The Toy Story That Time Forgot.

The synopsis reads:
During a post-Christmas play date, the ‘Toy Story’ gang find themselves in uncharted territory when the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangerously delusional. It’s all up to Trixie, the triceratops, if the gang hopes to return to Bonnie’s room in this ‘Toy Story That Time Forgot.’”

For the final bit of news this week, Disney's Frozen will be featured at this year's Hotel de Glace (Ice Hotel) in Quebec City, Canada. The Ice Hotel, which is essentially an entire hotel built entirely out of frozen ice will be featuring Frozen themed rooms this season through March 23rd. The hotel was also part of the inspiration for the Ice Castle seen in the film. Photos are of the hotel are now available.

Whew! That took a lot out of me! Make sure to check back for next weeks overhaul of news!

Disney Animation Review 8/9 - Make Mine Music & Fun and Fancy Free

Disney Animation Review: 8-9/53 - Make Mine Music & Fun and Fancy Free

Ryan Dosier - Today’s review covers both Make Mine Music (1946) and Fun and Fancy Free (1947), two more of Walt Disney’s “package films” that contain two or more animated shorts or a mixture of live action. The films were made to recoup some of the losses the studio faced during World War II. Although they surely kept the Disney studio afloat, it’s a shame that these films couldn’t have been better.

Make Mine Music features ten cartoon shorts, all unrelated, all set to different kinds of music. It is a very odd film and only four or five of the segments are worth watching. “All the Cats Join In” is about teenagers having fun and is lively and entertaining but ridiculously sexist (but what in the 40s wasn’t?). At one point a girl with a slightly bigger ass than the other girls is rejected by a boy, so the artist’s pencil erases her ass and draws it smaller. I was stunned.

Thankfully, the rest of the film is innocent and harmless (for the most part). There are a few real gems here such as “Casey at the Bat,” which features great music and narration and animation. “Peter and the Wolf” should be better than it is... but it lacks quite a bit. “Johnny Fedora & Alice Blue Bonnet” is an adorable, wonderful little short that clearly inspired Disney and Pixar’s recent short film efforts such as “Paperman” and “The Blue Umbrella.” Finally, there’s the story of Willie the opera singing whale, which is enjoyable and a delight, but features a shockingly tragic ending.

But for the most part, Make Mine Music is a collection of boring, uninspired, and downright lame cartoon shorts. There are a handful of truly fun pieces, but overall I found myself bored and ready for it to be over.
Then there’s Fun and Fancy Free, which is one of the most polarizing movies for me. I adore the second half, but I fall asleep during the first half. The film features Jiminy Cricket as the sort of narrator for no real reason. He leads the movie into the story of Bongo the circus bear who winds up in the woods. The story is so dull and really does not contain any sort of Disney magic. There’s a bit of fun during the bear square dance, but 95% of Bongo is boring.

Fun and Fancy Free picks up momentum with “Mickey and the Beanstalk,” narrated by the great ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his puppets Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. But they don’t really matter, since the real stars are Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. This 25 minute cartoon reminds viewers how spectacular Mickey, Donald, and Goofy are as a team. They work off of each other so well, especially in this. Donald has one of his greatest, craziest angry flip out moments and the animation is to die for.

Goofy sings a great, funny little song about “pancakes a foot high” as their hungry desperation sits in. Mickey gets to be the hero (which he always excels at). It’s just a lot of fun and the animation is top notch. Willie the Giant is a little lackluster and the magic harp is lame, but Mickey, Donald, and Goofy make Fun and Fancy Free worth your time (at least the second half of it).

Make Mine Music - 2/5 Blue Bonnets

Fun and Fancy Free - 2.5/5 Magic Beans

Disney Animation Reviews #3 - Fantasia

Disney Animation Review: 3/52 - Fantasia

Ryan Dosier - The third animated feature film from Walt Disney is the two-hour animated concert picture Fantasia (1940). The film combines the stunning animation of Walt Disney’s team of artists with beautiful classical music performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra and conducted by Leopold Stokowski. There are a total of seven performances in Fantasia, and I would be lying if I said I liked more than three of them.

For what it’s worth, Fantasia is one of the most visually stunning Disney features. You would be hard pressed to find animation this good, colors this dynamic, and layouts this breathtaking anywhere else. But what Fantasia excels at in artistry, it lacks in entertainment value (for the most part). Many of the segments go on for far too long, such as the “Nutcracker Suite,” which lasts at least 15 minutes. These lengthy run-times for the less impressive segments mean that Fantasia struggles to hold your attention for too long.

However, there are some very notable pieces in the film, including “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” starring Mickey Mouse, “Dance of the Hours” with ballet dancing hippos, and “Night on Bald Mountain.” These three, of all the pieces present, are the most entertaining, Disney-esque, and drastic.

Take “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” which is by far the most fun and entertaining of the bunch. Perhaps it commands attention and adoration so easily because it stars Mickey Mouse, but it succeeds nonetheless. The colors are a vibrant mixture of reds, blues, and yellows that strike or fade at the perfect moments. Mickey has never been better as he fights the magical broomsticks and dreams of greater things. This is truly one of Mickey’s crowning achievements as a character. It leaves me wondering why Disney chose to make a horrible live-action version with Nicholas Cage instead of adapting it into a feature film for Mickey Mouse… but I digress.

"Dance of the Hours" is the funniest and cleverest of the shorts. Disney had the genius idea to turn this into a comic ballet featuring ostriches, hippos, elephants, and alligators. Not only is it funny, but the character animation on the animal dancers is superb. If you ever wondered how a hippo dances, Fantasia has the answer. The hippo’s fat rolls and bounces and squishes in all the appropriate (or shockingly inappropriate) places. Even the alligators, led by the charming Ben Ali Gator, move realistically on their hind legs, even though that’s impossible. “Dance of the Hours” is a truly paramount moment for character animation—plus it’s hysterical.

And then there’s “Night on Bald Mountain,” one of Disney’s darkest pieces of work. Demons and ghosts and ghouls come from all around to gather at Bald Mountain, where the hideous Chernabog uses them at his will. He plunges them into hell, transfigures them, and is just plain spooky. The animation is some of Disney’s creepiest and best. The Chernabog’s hands, especially, move with eerie realism. The dancing demons are frightening, the skeletons and ghosts are perfect with pastel outlines, and everything just builds and builds and works brilliantly. Kudos to Disney for taking such a risk with this piece in particular.

All in all, Fantasia is not a bad film by any means. It just doesn’t fit my preference for narrative storylines and consistent characters. I believe that taking the movie in chunks, not all at once, is the best way too enjoy it, but to each his or her own.

Despite my misgivings about it, Fantasia is still one of the most gorgeous pieces of animated cinema ever. Walt Disney and his team stretched themselves to their limits creating this piece of art, and it shows. Like all good art, Fantasia takes some getting used to and requires time and thought to appreciate. I’m sure that’s why it doesn’t connect as well with me, but darn it if I’m not already wanting to watch “Dance of the Hours” again.
