Saving Mr. Banks Blu-Ray Review

Mitchell Stein- Released yesterday on Blu-Ray, Saving Mr. Banks tells the true story of how Walt Disney wooed P.L. Travers to the rights of her book, Mary Poppins to create the famous film adaption. Mary Poppins is well known for its music, special effects and it’s heartfelt story.
Saving Mr. Banks shows us the entire journey up until the movie started going into production. Oddly enough, the story seems to end before the filming takes place, but this movie really just offers a “behind-the-scenes” look at what it took just to receive the rights, and it’s quite an exciting journey.

The film’s cast is brilliant. While Tom Hanks may not look a lot like Walt Disney, the spirit of Walt lives on. In fact, there’s a sequence where Tom plays a scene from an actual Walt Disney clip word for word, and he does a spot-on impression of it, he’s a really fantastic actor and I can’t think of anyone better to play the role of Walt.

Emma Thompson steals the stage with her performance of the troubled and unhappy P.L. Travers. The story not only circulates around Travers, but it also offers flashbacks at Travers’s early life, and shows us her troubled childhood, and why she is unhappy with some of the things today.
The film’s detail is fantastic. How many people would have noticed Walt’s Smoke Tree Ranch tie clip on his tie? There’s many elements of the film’s set design that really speak to the die-hard Disney fans like myself. From the vintage items in Walt’s office to the detail in 1960’s Disneyland, The detail is just incredible and I applaud the film’s set design department.

As for the Blu-Ray release, I have to say I am shocked at the lack of bonus features to be found. When the film tells the in-depth story of the creation of Mary Poppins, the Blu-Ray bonus features barely give any insight into the creation or during the filming of Mary Poppins.

The Walt Disney Studios: From Poppins to Present offers a look at the famed Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank and looking back to what it was like during the filming of Mary Poppins in the 1960’s. There’s also Deleted Scenes and Let’s Go Fly A Kite, which shows the cast and crew break out into a chorus of the popular Mary Poppins song on the last day of filming. It’s fun, but doesn’t really make up for the lack of bonus features.

Overall, the film is great and the features could’ve used some more peeks at what it took to bring Poppins to the big screen, or even some behind the scenes look at the making of Saving Mr. Banks, especially with the amount of detail that went into the film. What usually pushes me to buy the Blu-Ray over the DVD version is when the Blu-Ray has a lot more bonus features. I was pleased incredibly with the film, but I was disappointed in the amount of bonus features.  Hopefully this will be corrected when the film is re-released in a couple of years.

Saving Mr. Banks is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Copy

Reaction: Disney's Oscar Nominations 2013

Ryan Dosier - The Academy Award nominations for 2013 films were announced today and Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Marvel all received some great nominations. Check them all out below:

Animated Feature Film
   - FROZEN
Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee, and Peter Del Vecho

Makeup and Hairstyling
   - THE LONE RANGER
     Joel Harlow and Gloria Pasqua-Casny

Original Score
   - SAVING MR. BANKS
     Thomas Newman

Original Song
   - "Let it Go" from FROZEN
Music and Lyric by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez

Animated Short Film
   - GET A HORSE!
     Lauren MacMullan and Dorothy McKim

Visual Effects
   - IRON MAN 3
Christopher Townsend, Guy Williams, Erik Nash and Dan Sudick

   - THE LONE RANGER
Tim Alexander, Gary Brozenich, Edson Williams and John Frazier

As with every year, there were some major snubs as well. Here are the (Disney-related) snubs that shocked me completely...

  • Emma Thompson not nominated for Best Actress - Emma Thompson received NOTHING for her role as P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks. This is just an egregious error that I completely don't understand. Shutting out the strongest part of Saving Mr. Banks and one of the finest performances by an actress this year? Baffling. Many critics agree with me that Meryl Streep's performance in August Osage County does not merit a nomination. How she won out on a nomination over Emma Thompson I will never know.
  • Monsters University not nominated for Best Animated Feature - What?! I just... HUH?! Nominating The Croods over Monsters University is just unbelievable. I'm stunned to see Pixar shut out of the Oscars completely for the first time since 2001. I never thought I'd have to say this, but Pixar was robbed.
  • Tom Hanks not nominated for Best Supporting Actor - The fact that Tom Hanks wasn't nominated for Best Actor (Captain Phillips) is one thing, but to see him snubbed for Supporting Actor as well is crazy. I'm very disheartened to see that no one is awarding--or even nominating Tom Hanks for his turn as Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks. Incredibly disappointing.
I could go on, but these are the biggest snubs that completely infuriate me this year. Seeing Saving Mr. Banks only receive one nomination is also ridiculous... but maybe I'm biased.

Nonetheless, huge, huge, HUGE congratulations to everyone at Disney for their nominations. Especially the folks at Walt Disney Animation, who have elevated the studio back to where it belongs. To my friends at the Animation Studio who worked on Frozen and Get a Horse!, I'm so proud to know you!

Saving Mr. Banks Film Review

Ryan Dosier - Releasing wide in theaters all over today is Saving Mr. Banks, the true story of Walt Disney's efforts to sway Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers to bring her beloved story to the silver screen. The film takes place over a two-week period and follows the mostly true story of that period. We also see Travers' backstory played out through wonderful flashbacks as we discover why Mary Poppins is so important to her and why she is so guarded as a person.

The biggest coup of Saving Mr. Banks is the fact that this is the first time Walt Disney has ever been portrayed on screen by an actor. It was incredibly hard for me to fathom anyone who could do justice to Walt, but I learned once again that you should never underestimate Tom Hanks. Hanks disappears into the role and brings Walt Disney to life in a truly moving and incredible way. Not once while watching the film did I think to myself, "Oh, that's just Tom Hanks." Hanks is the perfect choice for Walt Disney and I fell in love with his performance. He is simply outstanding.

However the biggest joy of the film is Emma Thompson's P.L. Travers. Oscar-worthy is absolutely the adjective I would use to describe Thompson's portrayal of the persnickety author. Her emotional journey through the movie is brilliant and Thompson takes us along with her through every high and low. The scene where she finally relents to the charms of Disney music and releases some joy is far and away my favorite moment in the film. My heart soared and I had tears in my eyes. It's a beautiful, expertly executed scene. Emma Thompson absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination for her brilliant turn as Travers, and I won't be surprised when she gets one.

The rest of the cast is magnificent as well. Colin Farrell wowed me as Travers Goff, P.L. Travers alcoholic father. His work in the film is wonderful and I can't believe how little he was played up in the promotion for the film. Paul Giamatti plays Travers' driver Ralph and might have been my favorite character. Bradley Whitford is awesome as screenwriter Don DeGradi. Jason Schwartzman and BJ Novak steal the show more than once as the legendary Sherman Brothers. Every player in this film is a delight and adds rich story, character, and fun to the movie. A marvelous cast if there ever was one.

There are so many excellent moments in the film, but the scene with Walt and Mrs. Travers at Disneyland is a major highlight. It is so incredible to see the park turned back in time. I loved watching park-goers coming up to Walt and watching Walt jovially interact with anyone who wanted to meet him. Disney magic is in full force throughout that scene. Every time music from Mary Poppins is played, I adored it. There is a scene using the song "Fidelity Fiduciary Bank" that was especially well done. The final scenes at the premiere of Mary Poppins are also just marvelous.

In the end, it's just really, really hard not to love this film if you're a Disney fan--and even if you're not. It is uplifting, inspiring, and magical. Saving Mr. Banks reminds us of the joys and the sorrows of being a creator and a storyteller. The praise for the film is well-deserved, and I'm happy to add my praise to it. As Walt says, "every time someone walks into a movie house...they will rejoice." That was true for Mary Poppins, and it is true for Saving Mr. Banks. The movie will leave you singing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mitchell Stein- For years, Mary Poppins has been considered to be Walt Disney’s cinematic crowning achievement, the Oscar winning film, with incredible creative animated sequences, a heartfelt story and fantastic songs by the Sherman Brothers, it earns that title quite well.

It’s surprising that Mary Poppins almost never happened.

Saving Mr. Banks tells the story of how Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) wooed P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) into the rights of her book in order to grant the rights to the movie adaption. If the movie would’ve gone into the hands of Travers, Mary Poppins as we know it would probably not exist. The version we would know would be a very depressing, sad and unenjoyable film unlike the bouncy colorful film we know as today.

The film’s cast is brilliant. Although Walt Disney really in essence just looks like Tom Hanks’ in a mustache, the spirit of Walt lives on in this movie. This film takes Walt Disney beyond the legend and showcases him just as a regular person. It may have been meant to weaken people’s godly thoughts of Walt Disney, but if anything, it may have strengthened mine. The look and sound of Walt may not seem right, but the spirit of Walt was spot on. His performance was great, and it makes me wonder if they were planning to bring him back to play Walt in 2015's Tomorrowland

The movie also stars B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman brilliantly playing the roles of the Sherman Bros, Bradley Whitford as screenwriter Don Dagradi and Paul Giamatti as Ralph the driver.

Saving Mr. Banks is not only the ultimate gift to fans of the Mary Poppins movie, but for Disney fans in general. It goes very in detail at certain parts of the story, and accurately playing out to old audio recordings of the meetings that were insisted upon by P.L. Travers herself (some of the audio can be heard over the credits of the movie). It also makes you appreciate all the little details and hard work that went into the film, including some really memorable references and musical numbers that will make any Disney fan break into tears.

The facts and hidden gems are incredibly detailed. Most average moviegoers won’t recognize Walt’s Smoke Tree Ranch tie clip, or the way Tom Hanks strokes his mustache and speaks like Walt, but as a major Disney fan, I instantly recognized every detail, even to the items on his office shelves are amazing, vintage Mickey merchandise and others. The set design in this movie is fantastic.

I have no absoloutley negative things to say about this movie. In the beginning, the story flashes from 1906 to the 1960s, constantly telling both eras of Travers’ story. It’s rather frustrating at first, but you’ll get used to it as the movie goes on.

I wish they would have gone a little more in detail during the filming of the movie, but I guess the movie was long enough where it is now, with an enjoyable two and a half hours.

Saving Mr. Banks is a movie for every Disney fan. Rest assured, you will love this movie. Not just should you enjoy the comedy, the music and touching moments, but also, be on the lookout for lots of hidden gems and facts. I honestly loved this movie, and I hope it earns the Oscar buzz it's been getting the past few months, because honestly, this might even deserve Best Picture (although it probably won't get it).

Saving Mr. Banks opens everywhere today, December 20th

Review: 'Mary Poppins' 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray

Mitchell Stein- Disney fan confession: I have never seen the full Mary Poppins film until this past Tuesday (shocking, huh?).

In preparation for Saving Mr. Banks, I decided to make sure I got to see Mary Poppins before the screening. Let me say I’m glad I did.

Since I knew all the iconic songs to the film, it was great seeing it come to life in the colorful restoration of the film on Blu-Ray, and comparing it to the included DVD, the picture quality on the Blu-Ray looks fresh and crisp. A great way to experience the film.

The film, starring Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews, brings lots of fun gags and great music to the film making it a warm, charming and wonderful picture.
As charming as the movie might be, it’s lacking one essential element: story. The movie seems to be missing any kind of continuous story and just leaves the story to be of Mary Poppins doing incredible things. That’s not saying the film isn’t enjoyable, but it did feel slow without any plot to
follow.

Many of the scenes tend to drag on as well, especially in the opening scenes featuring Mr. and Mrs. Banks before Mary Poppins finally arrives. Although many of the film’s original fans might think it’s flawless, but looking at it today, it tends to drag out and brings the film’s length to a hefty two full hours.

What is described as Walt Disney’s crowning achievement definitely earns its title. Some of the visuals and special effects used in this film are incredible for its day and still baffle me today and making me think, “How did they do that?” It also showcases an incredible live action/animation interaction scene; a feature that would become more advanced nearly thirty years later in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’

The bonus features add a lot to the fun, especially “Becoming Mr. Sherman”, a new feature showcasing Jason Schwartzman and Richard Sherman about getting into the role of Richard Sherman in Saving Mr. Banks. Also included was Mary-Oke Sing A Longs, a Deleted Scene, and The Making of Mary Poppins. Special song collections and Mary Poppins pop up facts, as well as an Audio Commentary were included on the DVD.

Overall, this release is a great celebration of the Academy Award winning film and a great new way for old fans to re-watch the forever classic movie, and if you also (shockingly) haven’t seen the movie yet either, make sure to pick up a copy in time for Saving Mr. Banks, which hits theaters December 20th.

Oh yeah, one more thing: Supercalifragilisticexialdocious!

Looking Back at Walt Disney - 112 Years Later

Mitchell Stein- 112 years ago today, a brilliant filmmaker, inventor and futurist was born. His name was Walt Disney.

Since that day, Walt has moved on to start his own company, The Walt Disney Studios, created dozens of iconic characters and opened a theme park based on his properties.

We’ve come a long way since Walter Elias Disney was born 112 years ago, but his spirit still lives on in the continuous work of the Walt Disney Company. Films like Frozen and Saving Mr. Banks carries his legacy and shines a light even brighter on the Disney Company.

From Mickey to Muppets and to Marvel and Lucasfilm (etc.) Disney has played a big part in many of our lives. How can we possibly imagine a world without Disney? Walt changed the face of animation and filmmaking and created great new techniques and concepts way ahead of it’s time.

For me personally, Disney has meant a lot. From the films which I owned on VHS, to Walt Disney World and beyond, Disney has played a major role in my life personally.
I grew up watching, and re-watching, (and re-watching) many Disney films including The Lion King, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Toy Story, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and The Tigger Movie.
The fandom might have really started for me a few years ago when we were travelling to Disney a lot, and as I got more involved in the Disney/Muppet fan world, and it brought me to co-run this incredible new blog celebrating all things Disney, and that’s what we continue to do.

I guess that’s what Disney adds to my life every day, and will probably continue in the future. Happy Birthday Walt!

Celebrate Walt's Legacy by seeing Saving Mr.Banks which hits select theaters December 13th and nationwide December 20th! Review will be posted shortly.
